The Original "Our Lady of Częstochowa -- Black Madonna"

One of the great icons of Christendom, the Black Madonna of Częstochowa has been associated with many miracles and has survived for centuries. Originally a Byzantine icon from the early Middle Ages, (some even say painted by St. Luke), it was brought to Poland in the 14th Century. There it has been revered as the Queen and Protector of Poland. (For those unfamiliar with the Catholic faith, this is a title of Mary in Heaven for a role she plays, not the painting itself.) The scars on her cheek are purportedly the desecrations of a Hussite soldier's sword. The legend is she is black because of smoke.

There are many, many variations of Our Lady of Czestochowa, but this is the original. In Byzantium, this type of icon was known as "Hodegetria,"or "One Who Shows the Way." The Way is her Son.
